The autumn leaves are falling, the weather’s getting colder and the nights are getting longer…with a brisk pumpkin-scented wind in the air and shadows beginning to play tricks on your mind, it can only mean that Halloween is on it’s way!
A favorite time for many folk to share ghost stories and don their favorite costume, Halloween just isn’t the same until the season gets kicked off by watching The Nightmare Before Christmas. But as popular as that tale might be in this day and age, for many years there was another stop-motion animation story that signaled the coming of All Hallow’s Eve… kind of cheesy but still lots of fun, Mad Monster Party was the best, just check out the trailer:
For now, to really get you in the Halloween mood, here’s a short and well known folk ghost story as retold by S.E. Schlosser titled, The Llorona, Omen of Death.
They say that the Llorona was once a poor young girl who loved a rich nobleman, and together they had three children. The girl wished to marry the nobleman, but he refused her. He told her that he might have considered marrying her if she had not born the three out-of-wedlock children, which he considered a disgrace. The girl was determined to have the nobleman for her own, so she drowned her children to prove her love to him. But still he would have none of her and married another. Mad with grief, the girl walked along the river, weeping and calling for her children. But they were gone. So she drowned herself. For her crime, her spirit was condemned to wander the waterways, weeping and searching for her children until the end of time. It was said that whenever the wailing woman appears, someone will die.
Now I have heard that one night, two young men were out driving in their car one summer night with the windows down when they heard a terrible wail. It sounded like the desperate cry of a baby or perhaps an injured tom-cat. Beside the road, a white mist began to gather. It moved in front of a grove of palm trees and became the figure of a lovely young girl dressed all in white. Long dark hair hung loose down her back. She began to weep and wring her hands in agony, and the men realized that they were seeing the ghost of the Llorona. The driver gunned the engine and they drove away as fast as they could. The glowing figure of the Llorona remained visible in the rear-view mirror until the car turned the corner.
The men were upset by the vision, afraid that the rumors about her might be true. But nothing happened to them the rest of that night. After a few drinks to calm themselves, they were able to laugh away the incident. And in the golden light of the next morning, the young men decided they had imagined the whole thing.
The night after the ghost sighting, the two men were riding home passed the place where they had seen the Llorona when their car spun out of control. The automobile hit a tree in the palm grove where the Llorona had appeared the previous night, and both men were killed instantly.
All good things sadly do have to come to an end! After 12 years on Broadway, international tours, and a movie featuring the original Broadway cast. Rent has officially closed on Broadway! The musical opened in New York in 1996 and was the recipient of four Tony awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Most memorable songs include: ‘Seasons of Love’, ‘Today 4 U’, and ‘La Vie Boheme’.
Check out my personal favorite, ‘Seasons of Love’
To reach out to all Rent heads across America, Sony recorded the final Broadway performance. Only 4 showings over 4 days at local theaters. As one of those who went to watch it, I have to say it was almost like watching a live show. We even had a 10 min intermission! There were times in the theater when you thought you had gone to a sing-a-long show. Everyone hummed or sang bits and pieces of ‘Seasons of Love.’ After each song was performed the audience erupted in to applause the first few songs, until we realized there was really no reason to clap. As one of my favorite musicals I’m sad to see it close. It’s okay I’ve still got the Original Broadway Cast recording and the DVD.

This year’s Fall CTIA show saw PlayPhone making two major announcements that both demonstrated its ability to secure top branded content for distribution as well as continuing to grow in global markets.
National Geographic has joined PlayPhone to distribute its award winning images and music in the form of wallpapers, ringtones and much more. Additionally, PlayPhone will be powering National Geographic’s mobile destination and storefront.
PlayPhone has now also opened shop in Canada. This marks only the second direct-to-consumer company to be in Canada and allows Canadian consumers to get some of PlayPhone’s top notch branded mobile entertainment.
During the show, a few friends dropped by to chat such as bnetTV. Check out how that went:
If you want a better look at our little set up in the M-Tertainment Pavilion, here are a few pics…
Next CTIA is scheduled for spring in Vegas! I’m sure PlayPhone will have many other great announcements before and during. See you there!
Of course when one thinks of the musical ‘Grease‘ John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John pop in to your head. Last summer, ‘Grease’ returned to Broadway starring a Danny and Sandy who were casted through winning a reality television show. After a one year run they have parted from the show and replacing them are the runner ups for the roles. This show stopper just never gets old. Who can resist shaking their hips and motioning the famous ‘Grease Lighting‘ moves or better yet the ‘Hand Jive!’ If you haven’t see this it’s a must rent, it’s only a musical classic!
Seems like these days musicals have become a fad, thanks to Disney’s ‘High School Musical‘ What started two years ago as a Disney Special has now take the world by a storm with live stage performance or even the ice show! The music is catchy take a listen for yourself. Everyday, Breaking Free, and ‘What Time is it?‘
While it seems totally cheesy sometimes everyone needs a little dose of musicals!
College football season is here and so are the hopes of countless faithful cheering on their Alma Mater all the way to the BCS Championship, but still many questions remain. Can LSU repeat? Will Ohio State make a third straight trip and finally win after two straight losses? Can USC get back to the top? Or is Georgia the dark horse to take it all this year?
Well, while you’re pondering all of the possibilities, you should check out some of the cool wallpapers PlayPhone has to offer.
And dont forget your favorite fight songs, they’ll undoubtedly put you in prime condition for cheering on your school to victory!
I’m gonna try my best to steer clear of any Olympic scandal or mention of the real life Aquaman’s golden quest because most likely, or at least hopefully, you’ve grown tired of all that jibber jabber. Instead, I want to focus on something I enjoy much more, and that’s music in TV commercials.
No doubt you’ve also been bombarded by countless commercials during these Olympics and when it comes to big sporting events like these, companies always pull out all the stops. Everytime there is at least one that really captures my attention and it’s usually due to the music used within the commercial. The usual result is me hitting the internet trying to find out what the heck that song was. How many times has that happened to you? This time around it was the commercial featuring the GM family of cars and after some quick digging, I found it was Brandi Carlile’s “The Story”. I was stoked to find out PlayPhone has the ringtone to it.
Other recent searches for my voracious musical appetite include Yael Naim’s “New Soul” for the MacBook Air and “I can’t seem to make you mine” by The Seeds as heard in the Axe Bullet commercial. I was actually able to find a video of The Seeds performing their song in classic form on American Bandstand.
But I still do prefer the Garbage remake, if only because it features Shirley Manson.
How about you? What TV commercial has you going crazy to find out the song?
The Beijing Olympics are set to go and who will you be rooting for? A single athlete or perhaps a particular team? How about your entire country? Stand up and show your national pride by flying your country’s colors on your phone with a wallpaper! Choose from one of these or many others, just visit PlayPhone’s wallpaper section.
To REALLY jump into the spirit of things, why not grab your country’s national anthem while you’re there to support your nation all the way to the gold medal! Select from any of these ringtones plus many others:
Voltron is a giant mecha robot comprised of five smaller lion robots (though he came in different forms afterwards) who kicked butt over King Zarkon’s Robeasts to save the planet Arus.
The Summer of 2008 will most likely be remembered as the summer of superheroes since we’ve already seen the likes of IronMan, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy, Hancock and to some extent Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda and Wall.E, with more yet to come. None of these however have generated such hype and excitement as The Dark Knight, Batman’s lates foray on the big screen that is already receiving rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike.
Here’s a quick review from one of our own lucky team members who has already seen the movie:
“Easily the best “Batman” film to hit the silver screen. Unlike its predecessors, this film shows the good and evil within as well as the conflict of man vs. self. At times, Batman would often wonder if he could even continue fighting his nemesis, the Joker, because in order to defeat the sadistic Joker requires Bruce Wayne to extend beyond his personal values. The Joker’s character is the pure definition of evil. He “gets off” on “offing” people, and no one can portray that as well as Heath Ledger: a stunning performance. This movie has set the bar for future Batman flicks as well as any other comic book and/or superhero movie to come.”
What is it about this film that has people dressing up as their favorite bat-character and waiting in line for a 3 a.m. showing? You’d think it was the premiere of a new Star Wars!
The success of this second film will undoubtedly call into mind a third film and outside of characters that have already been portrayed, who else would you like to see in the future? My vote’s on Harley Quinn.
In the meantime, why don’t you take a walk down Batman memory lane and download some old skool ringtones from:
